Pages competing for the same keyword

Learn what is checked in this report and how to fix any issues found

This report indicates if there are pages on your website that are optimized for the same keywords and that compete with each other in terms of rankings.

Why you should not have multiple pages optimized for the same keyword:

Search engines such as Google will usually only return one result per website/domain for any given search query.

If you have multiple pages optimized for the same keyword, then these pages will be in competition with each other and hinder each other's rankings.

This is known as "keyword cannibalization".

How Seobility identifies competing pages:

Seobility analyzes the content of each of your pages and determines the most important keywords and keyword combinations for each page. If two pages are well-optimized for the same keywords or if there is a large overlap between the optimized keywords, they will be listed here.

How to fix these problems:

If you have more than one page on the same topic on your website, this is a classic case of keyword cannibalization. There are several possible solutions that can solve this problem:

  • Merge the content of the pages into a single page.
  • Add some unique content to both pages to make them stand out from each other and to optimize them for more specific keywords.
  • Redirect one of the URLs to the other URL.

Which of these approaches is the best one will depend on the individual case.

Note: This analysis may also display cases of duplicate content if the pages were not classified as duplicates due to small differences in the text.

In this case, the recommendations for duplicate content apply. (See the "Duplicate content" analysis.)

In addition, it is also possible that pages are listed which contain only a small amount of content and have the same page titles or headings.

In this case, we're not talking about "keyword cannibalization" but about "thin content". If you have pages like this, you should check whether you really need them and add more content to them if necessary.
